DEFENDER OF THE FAITH

A peculiar title belonging to the sovereign of England, asthat of “Catholic” to the king of Spain, and that of “Most Christian” to the king ofFrance. These titles were originally given by tlie popes of Home; and that of DefensorFiilei was first conferred by Pope Leo X. on King Ilenry VIII., as a reward for writingagainst Martin Luther; and the bull for it bears date quinto Id us Octob., 1521.
